Rhode Island’s full name, believe it or not, is The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, which actually makes it the official longest state name out of any state in the United States. What’s funny is that Rhode Island isn’t actually an island; it borders both Massachusetts and Connecticut on the mainland, but that just makes it easier to find auto shipping to or from the state. Read on to find what lies in wait for you in Rhode Island.

What’s great about Rhode Island is that you are no further than 45 minutes away from any source of water; whether it’s a lake, stream, river or ocean, you’re that close to it. Because of the abundance of fresh water in the state, wildlife is common in the many forests, so hunting is a major draw for outdoor enthusiasts. However, not everyone like to hunt furry animals; if you’re one of those people, there are many other things to do including boating, skiing, hiking, bicycling, yachting, driving – you name it, and you can find it outside in Rhode Island. Except home-baked cookies, because those don’t grow on trees.

Despite the number of ski resorts in the state, there is not one mountain; the tallest peak in the state is Jeriomoth Hill, which sits just 812 feet above sea level. However, skiing isn’t the state’s main attraction – that distinction goes to its many lakes and rivers, and it was because of these sources of water that Samuel Slater, the man to invent the textile mill (though he stole it from a British guy) in the United States, decided to build his first mill in Rhode Island. The first Slater Mill was constructed on the banks of the Blackstone River, which has earned Rhode Island the name the “Birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution.”

Rhode Island is a typical New England state – full of cool harbor towns, lots of outdoor activities, but ultimately what will draw you will be the weather. During the summer, sunshine is common, with highs typically getting into the mid-80’s on average during the day and lows only dropping into the low-to-mid 60’s overnight. If snow is your thing, though, head there in the winter time; average highs only top out at around 50 degrees during the day, with overnight lows often dropping down to around the freezing point, and snow is all too common.
