Cary is actually not classified as a city, but rather a town; given this classification, however, it is the largest town in the state, but only the seventh largest municipality or population center in North Carolina.
It was originally founded as Bradford’s Ordinary in 1750, and because of its location directly between two major cities at the time, the North Carolina Railroad decided to build a railroad through the area in order to connect the two larger cities. Because of this, it grew rapidly, and in 1854 the name of the city had changed to Cary. At the time, the city council did not want growth of the town to go unchecked, and ordnances were passed to help control growth – this is the main reason that Cary is not larger today.
During the summer months, average daily highs in Cary only reach into the mid 80’s during the day, though overnight lows often tend to drop down into the low-to-mid 60’s. On the other hand, during the winter, average daily highs in Cary only reach into the low 50’s during the day, and overnight lows often drop down into the low 30’s and even into the high 20’s.
