According to the official US Census, conducted in 2000, the population of the city was over 687,000, making it the largest city in the state of North Carolina and the 18th largest city in the United States. Charlotte is also unique in the sense that it is the largest city on the Eastern seaboard between Jacksonville, Florida and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; the greater Charlotte Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of just fewer than 1.9 million residents.
Charlotte was founded in the middle of the 18th century and grew slowly until its incorporation in 1768. The main reason that the city was incorporated was because the uncle of James K. Polk settled in the area in 1755 and naturally attracted settlers to the area. Its nickname, “Hornet’s Nest,” comes from a battle between colonists and British soldiers during the American Revolution. Today, the city has expanded greatly, with an incredibly diverse economy that has remained relatively untouched through the economic crisis of the past few years.
Like most other cities in the area, Charlotte experiences humid, warm summers with more cold-weather winters. During the summer, average daily highs in the city reach about 84 degrees, while overnight lows can drop into the low-to-mid 60’s. During the winter, however, temperatures are much lower, with average highs reaching around 48 degrees with lows dropping into the low 30’s overnight.
