The city also sits at the heart of the Great Chicago Metropolitan Area, which has a population of over 9.5 million residents, though most of them live outside of the actual city. Chicago also sits on the banks of Lake Michigan, making it a great recreational area as well as a commercial one.
Chicago was founded in 1833 by American settlers, and during much of the 19th century the city served as the largest rail hub in the Great Lakes area. Because of its status as a major railroad hub, the city began to grow rapidly; however, this rapid expansion came at a cost. Because of unchecked building in the heart of the city, including many unsafe building practices, the city caught fire in 1871. This fire is now known as the Great Chicago Fire and it destroyed over a third of the city. The fire ripped through the business district, laying destruction down on anything it could. However, Chicago, being the booming town it was, was rebuilt in full in just a few years, albeit with safer building practices as a result of the fire.
During the Great Depression, which was exacerbated by Prohibition, Chicago became the number one city for organized crime. Perhaps the most famous gangster was Al Capone, who ran the city’s nightlife and underground alcohol rings until his capture. However, he was not the only one; he was simply the most famous. After the end of World War II and the end of Prohibition, the city’s image was retooled into one of business and recreation; Chicago now ranks as one of the safest cities in the United States, despite its size.
The city lies in what is known as a humid continental climate; this means that during the summer months, average daily temperatures top out at around 82 degrees, while overnight lows often drop to around 64 degrees. During the winter months, however, temperatures are much lower, with daily highs hitting just around 40 degrees, with lows typically dropping below freezing overnight.
