It is the largest city in the state that is not on or near the Pacific Coast, and it is also the cultural and economic center of the Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Fresno began in 1856 and was named for the many ash trees that were growing in the area; it was first settled by the Spanish, though after California was admitted to the United States the town was resettled by Americans looking for a new life out west. The railroad came to the area in 1872 and in 1874 it became the county seat of the then brand-new Fresno County, California. Agriculture played a major role in the city’s expansion up until the end of World War II; after the war, the emphasis was placed on urban development and corporations as opposed to small farmers; this trend continues to this day.
Like most other inland cities in northern California, the city experiences relatively warm summers and cool winters. During the summer months average highs get into the mid 90’s, with overnight lows dropping down into the mid 60’s. During the winter, however, temperatures stay in the mid 50’s during the day and drop into the high 30’s overnight.
