The city as we know it today was founded by a man named Jack Swilling in 1867. The Spanish had abandoned the area after it was ceded to the United States in 1848, and Jack saw potential in the city, primarily for farming (due to all the canals). The city grew rapidly, finally earning incorporation in 1881.

The city is located in an arid climate which results in very hot summers and relatively mild winters. During the summer months, highs have been known to hit upwards of 107 degrees during the day, though average highs hover in the mid 90’s. Winter temperatures, however, top out at around 72 degrees during the day, with overnight lows often dropping to around 48 degrees.
