Arlington Is not actually a city, per se, but a consolidated city-county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is known as Arlington County, though colloquially it is simply Arlington; it is located directly across the Potomac River from Washington D.C. and several highways and tunnels across the river link to two cities. According to the US Census Bureau, the city-county is the fourth largest population center in the state as well as the 96th largest in the United States.
Arlington has been around since the colony of Virginia was founded, though it would be quite some time before it was actually settled in force. Perhaps the most interesting part of the city’s history, however, is during the American Civil War; technically, the area wasn’t a part of the Confederacy, so Federal laws still applied. Turns out that Robert E. Lee’s mansion was located in Arlington County, and a property tax was leveled on the house; the Lees were forced to pay in person (but if they did that they would be arrested), so the house was confiscated until the death of Robert E. Lee, when the government gave his heirs $150,000 for the property and gave it back to them anyway.
During the summer months, average daily highs in the city top out in the mid-to-high 80’s during the day, with overnight lows dropping down into the low 70’s; during the winter months, however, the average daily highs in the city reach into the mid 50’s during the day while overnight lows tend to drop down into the 30’s.
