Home to over 130,000 residents, Huntsville is one of the largest cities in the state of Alabama and the largest city in the region where it lies. It was originally known as Twickenham and was settled by a man named John Hunt, who had built a log cabin right smack in the middle of what would become known as Huntsville. After the War of 1812, the city formerly known as Twickenham was renamed Huntsville to honor its founder, John Hunt. Huntsville Auto Shipping is a simple process.
It was incorporated in 1811 as Twickenham (later reincorporated as Huntsville), though the city itself was founded in 1805. Huntsville was, at one point, the home of the state capital of Alabama before Montgomery was chosen, and during the American Civil War Huntsville was a major railroad hub that the Union army captured in 1862, which the Confederates could not recapture. At the time the Union decimated the city, laying waste to crops and homes, though after the war ended residents who had fled the carnage returned home to rebuild their lives. Huntsville grew into a major textile city and many smaller cities began to grow around Huntsville to help support its growth.
By the time the United States became involved in World War II, Huntsville had grown into a city of over 13,000 residents; this number grew rapidly, however, after the outbreak of the war, for the U.S. Government decided to build the Redstone Arsenal near the city. The Arsenal was a massive complex full of different types of munitions plants which brought thousands upon thousands of jobs and residents to the city. The Redstone Arsenal was no longer needed after the end of World War II, and was in danger of being shut down completely. However, after major lobbying and support from civilians, Congressmen and high-ups in the U.S. military, the Arsenal was repurposed into a missile research program, which in turn gave birth to the U.S. space program.
The Redstone Arsenal was the build site for the Saturn V rocket, which was used in the Apollo program and also led the way for the development of military-grade rockets during the Cold War. This officially puts Huntsville on the map – because of its manufacturing roots, the city grew by leaps and bounds, and today is one of the largest cities in the state of Alabama, and one of the few which still has manufacturing as its economic foundation today.
Like many other cities in the state, Huntsville is hot in the summer and cool in the winter. During the summer, typical highs top out at around 88 degrees or so during the day, with overnight lows typically dropping down to around 65 degrees. During the winter months, however, highs rarely get above 60 degrees during the day and lows often drop below 40 degrees overnight. It is also prone to tropical storms, which have been known to cause damage to buildings due to falling trees.
