San Francisco is a city located in the Bay Area of the state of California; it ranks fourth in terms of population in the state, behind Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose. Currently it is the 12th largest city in the United States, with a population of over 800,000. San Francisco is known for its liberal politics; it was the first city to legalize gay marriage, and has been the site of many LGBT movements over the decades. It is also the home of Haight-Ashbury, the nexus of the hippie movement in the 1960’s.

San Francisco began its existence as a small Spanish mission. In 1821 it was ceded to Mexico following the Mexican Revolution, and then again to the United States in 1850 after the end of the Mexican-American War. San Francisco remained a small frontier town until gold was found near the city in 1849; it boomed virtually overnight, with suppliers and prospectors alike moving into the town. In 1906 the city was the site of a massive fire that left over 400,000 people without homes; building codes were quickly changed, and the city began its long road to recovery. Today it is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, with population growth projections predicting that San Francisco will top San Jose in the next twenty years.

Due to its location on the Pacific Coast, the city enjoys cooler weather than most other cities in California. During the summer months, typical highs only reach the mid-70’s, with 80 degrees or above being rare. Overnight lows in the summer drop to around 55 degrees, and during the winter months highs top out around 60 with lows dropping to around 44 degrees on average.
